Cold sores are caused by a viral infection (herpes simplex) of the skin or mucus membranes. This is characterized by the appearance of single or multiple clusters of small blisters filled with a clear fluid on an inflamed base. It usually occurs around the mouth and lips. Following an initial infection, the virus becomes dormant in the nerve ganglia and reoccurs following minor infections, trauma, stress, or sun exposure. Incubation period is 2 to 12 days and the infection can last 1 to 2 weeks. Oral herpes affect some 20 to 40% of the adults in the U.S. on a recurring basis.
